Catholic Church Loses Bid to Stop Sex Assault Case

A Roman Catholic diocese must face tort claims stemming from sexual assaults allegedly committed by a former seminary student, a North Carolina appeals court ruled.

The Nov. 20 decision by the North Carolina Court of Appeals rejected arguments by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte, N.C., that the case should have been dismissed because it unconstitutionally entangled a state court with Bishop Peter Jugis and his supervision of students pursuing ordination as priests.
