BP, Anadarko Liable for Deepwater Horizon
Oil Spill Damages, Federal Judge Orders

HOUSTON—BP and its partner Anadarko Petroleum are liable for civil penalties under the federal Clean Water Act for pollution from the oil spill following the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon accident, the judge overseeing the multidistrict litigation over the spill ruled Feb. 22 (In re: Oil Spill by the Oil Rig “Deepwater Horizon” in the Gulf of Mexico, on April 20, 2010).

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana held that the subsurface discharge of oil was not from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig owned by Transocean Ltd.
