U.S. FTC to Probe Bias in Tech Algorithms, Acting Chair Says

Acting FTC Chairwoman Rebecca Kelly Slaughter said she has asked FTC staff to “actively investigate” algorithms used by tech companies that have discriminatory effects on consumers.

• “As sophisticated algorithms are deployed in ways that impact people’s lives, it’s vital to make sure they’re not used in discriminatory ways,” she said at a privacy webinar Wednesday
• Commission will also focus on deceptive practices involving facial recognition technology, Slaughter said
• Slaughter wants the FTC to issue findings this year on its review of privacy practices of internet service providers, including Comcast, Verizon Communications and Google Fiber
