TikTok Inc. collected user data through an in-app web browser in violation of the Federal Wiretap Act and California consumer-protection laws, a new proposed class action said.
The lawsuit comes less than two weeks after TikTok drew bipartisan fire in Congress over allegations the app operates as a massive surveillance program to the benefit of the Chinese government.
The Biden administration is currently seeking a security agreement with TikTok to spare it from a US ban floated under President Trump. Critics remain concerned that user data can leak to China via the popular app, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd.
