Stronger Online Safeguards for Kids Advance With California Bill

Online platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube would face added legal obligations to protect children and teens under a bill being considered in California’s legislature.

The bill, approved Tuesday by a committee in the state’s Assembly, would direct digital services likely to be accessed by children to build in privacy and safety protections by default and explain settings in a way that children would understand. It also would limit the collection of data on children and restrict profiling of them.
