Smithfield Says Biometric Privacy Suit Belongs in Federal Court

Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. is arguing a proposed biometric privacy class action targeting it should be handled in Illinois federal court rather than state court.

The meat processing giant alleged the suit is more appropriate in federal court since it meets diversity jurisdiction requirements, according to a notice of removal Smithfield filed April 9 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The Virginia-based company was sued in state court in February by three former employees who accused Smithfield of collecting their fingerprints in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
