Senate Commerce Privacy Bill on Track, Lawmakers Say (2)

A Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation working group is making progress on federal privacy legislation, three members of the group and an aide said June 11.

Tech companies and privacy advocates are pushing lawmakers to update U.S. privacy protections. Some tech companies want a change to ease compliance with international privacy regimes like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Privacy groups, for their part, want consumer protections guaranteed by federal law.

Debate on such issues as whether to include a private right of action in a federal privacy law hasn’t stalled talks, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said in an interview. ...
