North Carolina Voter Records May Be Subject to Disclosure, Court Rules

A group that sought records related to the U.S. citizenship status of voters in North Carolina won its bid to revive claims brought under federal election law.

In a Monday ruling, a federal appeals court voided an earlier district court decision that had rejected the Public Interest Legal Foundation Inc.'s claims based on the “sensitive nature” of the information sought.

The data requested includes information on people that North Carolina’s board of elections identified as potential noncitizens but later confirmed as citizens. While making their identities public would risk their reputations, that doesn’t make the requested documents “immune from ...
