New York Legislature Strengthens State’s Data Breach Laws

Legislation that would expand New York state’s data breach notification laws is heading to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

The state Assembly in a 94-2 vote June 17 passed the bill (A.5635B/S.5575B), known as the Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security, or SHIELD Act, which passed the state Senate by a 42-20 vote on June 5. Cuomo (D) has not indicated whether he will sign the measure. A spokesman for Cuomo said their office is reviewing the legislation.
