More Cities Going After Facial Recognition Use by Government

Growing concerns about government use, and potential misuse, of facial recognition technology has three more cities considering banning municipal agencies from using face-scanning tools on citizens.

A Somerville, Mass., legislative committee will take up a proposal June 24 to keep the government from using such technology and could send it for a full Council vote June 27. Similar measures are also on the table in two California cities. Oakland’s public safety committee will consider a proposed ban June 26, and a committee in Berkeley will weigh its proposal July 1.
