Groups Call for Halt to D.C. Area’s Facial Recognition Program

Privacy and civil rights groups are pushing a Washington, D.C.-area governing body to halt a program for testing facial recognition technology and release records on its use.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, which oversees regional issues impacting D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, should end funding for the facial recognition program, the groups said in a Wednesday letter. They’re also calling on the council to make public information on the project’s launch and other issues, such as implications for people’s privacy.
