Facial Recognition Needs Legal Code, U.K. Data Regulator Says

The U.K. needs a legal code to address how law enforcement should use live facial recognition technology, its data protection watchdog said, after an investigation raised “serious concerns” about use of the tools.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) made the recommendation after its investigation into the Metropolitan Police Service and South Wales Police prompted “serious concerns about the use of a technology that relies on huge amounts of sensitive personal information,” U.K. information commissioner Elizabeth Denham said in a blog post.

“Never before have we seen technologies with the potential for such widespread invasiveness,” she said.
