Cantwell Urges Data Security Provisions in Senate Privacy Bill (1)

The top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee is pushing to include data security provisions in a broad federal privacy bill, an addition that at least one Republican warns may complicate the bill’s outlook.

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) pushed for language that would establish data security and cybersecurity standards at a May 1 committee hearing. The move may open a rift with Republican members of a committee working group who are developing legislation.
