Campaign to Ban Police Use of Facial Recognition Gains Steam

A coalition of civil liberties, privacy, and human rights organizations have signed on to a call for a federal ban on law enforcement use of facial recognition technology.

More than 30 new organizations are backing a campaign launched in July by digital rights group Fight for the Future. The groups, including Color of Change, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, “plan to flood local, state, and federal lawmakers with letters and calls as bipartisan backlash to biometric surveillance reaches a boiling point,” Fight for the Future said in a Sept. 5 statement.
