California Police Plate-Reader Data Needs Security: Auditor (1)

California law enforcement agencies should boost privacy protections when using license plate readers, the state auditor said in a report.

Four agencies should update data protections in contracts with vendors, boost security for the information and regularly audit use of the readers, according to auditor Elaine Howle’s office.

The findings may add to concerns of lawmakers, regulators, and consumer advocates about the growing use of readers and other technologies, including those with artificial intelligence and facial recognition capabilities.
