Bills to Narrow, Broaden California Privacy Law Make Headway

Industry-backed changes to the California Consumer Privacy Act that would help retailers, carmakers, and insurers comply are advancing in the state legislature, along with bills to narrow the overall scope of information the law would cover.

Lawmakers also advanced bills to add biometric data to the state’s 2002 data breach notification law and require smart speaker manufacturers to get consumer consent before storing or sharing their voice recordings.
