Automakers Unable to Comply With Right to Repair Law, Group Says

Attorneys for an automotive manufacturers’ trade group representing General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. hammered a vehicle repair group during a trial over Massachusetts’ new right-to-repair law, saying it championed a ballot initiative in 2020 despite knowing compliance would be “impossible” under the proposed timeline.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation sued Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey (D) in federal court in a bid to block the law. The group is arguing the law is unenforceable and preempted by several federal statutes, including the Clean Air Act and the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
