AI Projects Need Data Privacy Protections, U.K. Regulator Says

Artificial intelligence project operators should implement practices to protect personal data, the U.K.'s information regulator said Thursday.

The Information Commissioner’s Office guidance is aimed at those who specialize in machine learning, which is increasingly used in areas from banking to healthcare to recognize images, convert speech to text, or classify credit risk.

“The headline takeaway is the value of considering data protection at an early stage,” the office said. “Retrofitting compliance as an end-of-project bolt-on rarely leads to comfortable compliance or practical products.”
