White House to Spend $1 Billion on Cancer Moonshot

The moonshot cancer initiative would receive a $1 billion jump-start in funding under a White House plan to “end cancer as we know it,” senior administration officials said Feb. 1.

Under the Obama administration’s plan, work on the cancer initiative would begin immediately with $195 million in new cancer activities at the National Institutes of Health. The president’s proposed budget to be released Feb. 9 for fiscal year 2017 will include $755 million in mandatory funds for new cancer-related research activities at both the NIH and the Food and Drug Administration to continue the initiative, officials said.
