Stem Cells Get an AI Assist to Jolt Manufacturing Process

Nov. 18, 2019, 3:19 PM

Scientists are using artificial intelligence to ensure stem cells are good enough for patients, potentially breaking a bottleneck in making these regenerative medicines commercially available to patients.

Kapil Bharti’s lab in the National Institutes of Health’s eye institute co-led research using tens of thousands of retinal stem cell images to develop an algorithm that can successfully detect which stem cell lines pass quality control tests. If successful in clinical trials, Bharti’s method could eliminate the need to make excess samples in the manufacturing process, potentially shaving off both time and costs required to commercialize these treatments.
