Spectris Sues Waters for Patent Royalties on Lab-Analysis Tools

Spectris’s Malvern unit said laboratory analysis tools sold by Waters’s TA Instruments unit infringe five patents related to microcalorimetry instruments.

  • Malvern is seeking cash compensation of at least a reasonable royalty and lost profits, and a court order blocking further unauthorized use of its inventions, according to complaint filed Tuesday in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware
  • Patents are related to isothermal titration calorimeters (ITCs), which measure the heat either released or absorbed during chemical reactions, including events such as when a drug binds to a protein, complaint says
