Shutdown Threatens NIH ‘Superfund’ Toxics Research Program

A partial government shutdown would leave an NIH hazardous waste research program unfunded, in spite of Congress’s efforts to protect medical research spending.

The fight between President Donald Trump and Democrats over Mexico border wall funding could mean nearly one-quarter of funding for operating expenses at federal agencies would stop Dec. 21, when a continuing resolution expires. Failure to enact the seven pending full-year spending bills by then would leave about 400,000 federal employees working without pay and furlough about 350,000 of those employees.
