Settlement Agreement Ends 20-Year Case
Over Disputed Use of Tribal Blood Samples

PHOENIX—Arizona State University and the state’s Board of Regents April 21 announced a settlement agreement with the Havasupai tribe and 41 of its members to resolve allegations of unauthorized genetic studies conducted on the tribe by university researchers (Havasupai Tribe v. Arizona State University settlement agreement announced 4/21/10).

Under terms of the settlement, the regents agreed to a $700,000 payment to 41 tribal members. The regents also agreed to enter into a collaborative agreement with the tribe in such areas as health, education, economic development, and engineering planning.
