Senator to Meet With Acting FDA Head, Talk Permanent Role

The FDA’s acting head will sit down soon with the powerful senator who would oversee his confirmation as the agency’s permanent head if eventually nominated.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told Bloomberg Government June 18 he recently spoke with Ned Sharpless, the acting Food and Drug Administration commissioner, and plans to meet with him again soon. As chairman of the Senate Health, Labor, Education and Pensions Committee, Alexander would preside over Sharpless’s confirmation hearings.

“I hear good things about him,” Alexander said June 18. “I always think it’s better to have a confirmed person in a major position in the administration. ...
