Philips Takes on Resmed in Battle to Provide Sleep to the Weary

Royal Philips NV has introduced a new wearable device to combat sleep disorders as it competes with U.S. rival ResMed Inc. for a share of the growing market.

With almost 40 percent of those aged 25 to 54 getting below the seven hours of recommended sleep a night, the Dutch health-care equipment supplier’s latest entry is the SmartSleep that uses sensors, and soon artificial intelligence, to hold the wearer in a deeper state of slumber for longer.

“Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately for us, many people struggle with their sleep,” Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten said in a media briefing....
