New NIH Cancer Chief Mulls Changes to Improve Data Sharing

The new head of the NIH’s cancer programs said he’s open to changes that make it easier for scientists to share de-identified cancer research data.

“I am personally becoming very interested in the area of data sharing,” Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless said during a Nov. 14 congressional briefing.

Any formal steps toward a draft policy or other changes are likely a long way off as Sharpless is just three weeks into his new role as director of the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health.
