Google, GE Bite on Medical AI While FDA Readies New Rules

General Electric Co. and Google are bringing artificial intelligence into medicine while federal regulators work on new rules for devices using adaptive machine learning.

Both tech giants recently announced plans to expand their medical artificial intelligence offerings. GE Healthcare announced Sept. 12 it had won FDA approval for an X-ray device that uses AI algorithms to detect air between the lung and chest wall. Two days earlier, the Mayo Clinic, one of the largest academic medical centers, and Google Cloud revealed a 10-year partnership to use advanced cloud computing and AI to improve data-driven care.
