Find a Novel Use for an Existing Drug? FDA Has an App for That

Doctors can now report their experiences with difficult-to-treat infectious diseases and spur novel uses for FDA-approved drugs through an app, the agency announced Dec. 5.

The Food and Drug Administration and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences launched a new application called CURE ID that is intended to promote potentially life-saving interventions and create smoother drug development for neglected diseases, the FDA said.

The platform pulls reports from caregivers about their experiences using an approved product for an unapproved use, the agency said. The app also reports results when drugs are used in new ways. Health-care providers may decide...
