Black Research Volunteers Improved Diversity in New Drug Trials

An increasing number of African American patients volunteered in research that is critical to making new medicines available, according to an FDA report released Feb. 5.

The Food and Drug Administration approved 59 novel drugs in 2018, including Merck’s HIV-1 infection drug Pifeltro and AstraZeneca’s Lumoxiti to treat hairy cell leukemia. It beat last year’s record of 46 for the number of novel therapies approved in a calendar year.
