Remote Worker Loses Appeal Over Michigan City’s Income Tax

A remote worker who challenged an income tax levied on nonresidents in Jackson, Mich., doesn’t have standing to sue because he never sought a refund, the state appeals court ruled.

Phillip Hofmeister worked in Consumers Energy‘s headquarters in Jackson until the company authorized employees to work from home during the Covid-19 pandemic. He filed a class action against the city on behalf of others like him whose employers continued to withhold the .5% Jackson city income taxes from their paychecks even though they weren’t working there.
