U.S. Ends Wireless Probe Over Barriers to Switching Carriers

The U.S. Justice Department ended an antitrust investigation into a trade association of wireless providers, including AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., after the group agreed to changes in how it sets the technology standards that allow consumers to switch carriers.

The department’s antitrust division said Wednesday that the new standard-setting process comes after the probe found the trade association and mobile phone carriers “stacked the deck in their favor” by steering technology in a way that limited competition between network providers.
