DOJ Joins Antitrust Fray Over Hollywood Agencies’ Package Deals

The antitrust dispute between Hollywood’s top agencies and the Writers Guild has embroiled the Department of Justice, which weighed in to take the agencies’ side on a key issue that could determine the outcome of the case in Los Angeles federal court.

The consolidated lawsuit involves antitrust claims in both directions. It concerns the agencies’ longtime practice of bundling together stars and writers in their pitches to production companies, then charging the studios for the “package” instead of taking a commission from their clients.
