NYPD Can’t Remove Religious Head Coverings for Booking Photos

The New York Police Department must face a class action alleging its policy requiring people who are arrested to remove their religious head coverings for photographs violates the state and U.S. Constitutions, the Southern District of New York ruled Friday.

Two women and Turning Point for Women and Families sued New York City after the NYPD required the women to remove their hijabs for a booking photograph. The police department ended the policy in November 2020.
