New York public school districts aren’t required to provide transportation for private school students on days when public schools are closed, the state’s highest court ruled Thursday.
The New York Court of Appeals sided with the state’s education department, which denied requests for Washingtonville Central School District to provide transportation to students at private schools within Orange County, about 50 miles northwest of New York City.
The education department’s decision is consistent with agency guidance that’s been in place since at least 1992, Associate Judge Michael Garcia wrote in the court’s unanimous opinion.
