New Jersey Estate Tax Refund Action Reopened by Appeals Court

The son of a woman killed in a natural gas explosion will get another chance to seek a refund of estate taxes paid to New Jersey on the settlement he received.

When a federal estate tax is adjusted downward, state law requires New Jersey to reduce the tax due if the taxpayer submits sufficient proof, the appeals court ruled in an unsigned opinion Friday. The judges remanded the case for reconsideration.
