House Lawmakers Urge Judge to Toss Gulf of Mexico Oil Lease Sale

A massive Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale should be blocked, because the federal government environmental review of the sale was flawed, House Democrats told a Washington, D.C., federal court.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s approval of Lease Sale 257 violates the National Environmental Policy Act, Reps. Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), and Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) told the court. Its decision also defies Congress’ efforts to “address the environmental impacts of oil and gas extraction,” according to the filing Dec. 3.
