Closure of Commercial Salmon Fishing in Alaska Draws New Lawsuit

The National Marine Fisheries Service acted against the Ninth Circuit’s orders when it completely closed off commercial salmon fishing in federal waters in Alaska, fishing groups told a federal court in the state Wednesday.

The agency’s decision will have “immediate and disastrous consequences on commercial processors and fishers” that depend on salmon fishing in the Cook Inlet, according to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. The closed area in the inlet has been an “essential part” of commercial fishing for more than 100 years, the lawsuit says.
