Californian’s Recreational Gold Mining Violated Federal Law

A California resident’s recreational gold mining in an Idaho river stirred up sediment and other pollutants, resulting in numerous unpermitted discharges in violation of federal law, a federal district court in Idaho said.

Shannon Poe mined with suction dredging in the South Fork Clearwater River without the appropriate permit, the Idaho Conservation League alleged in a citizen suit. The U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho, finding Poe’s mining activities polluted the water, granted the conservation group’s motion to hold him liable for violating federal law.
