California Spotted Owls to Get New Review by Wildlife Officials

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will decide by 2023 whether to grant California spotted owls Endangered Species Act protection under a settlement reached with environmental groups.

The agency believes it’s “prudent” to reconsider its 2019 finding that listing the species as threatened or endangered wasn’t warranted, according to the filing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The Fish and Wildlife Service will submit a new finding as to whether the listing the species is warranted, not warranted, or warranted but blocked by other proposals by Feb. 15, 2023, the Monday filing says.
