California’s experiment with remote legal proceedings ends next July 1 with the author of the bill to extend the sunset urging a receptive Senate on Tuesday to reject changes to the measure made in the lower house.
On a 0-38 vote, with two senators not voting, the Senate refused to concur in the state assembly’s amendments to legislation (SB 848) that would have extended the sunset for pandemic-prompted remote attendance at depositions, hearings, and trials to Jan. 1, 2026.
