Avenatti Financial Affidavits Must Be Made Public, Court Says

Documents filed by Michael Avenatti to prove that he qualifies for court-appointed counsel must be unsealed, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said.

The financial affidavits are judicial documents covered by common law and First Amendment rights of public access, and there are no “higher values” in play that outweigh the presumption of openness here, Judge Jesse M. Furman said.

Avenatti will have an opportunity to propose limited redactions, but Furman said he wouldn’t delay access any longer than necessary.
