ZTE Trial Loss to Maxell May Spur Others to Settle, Lawyer Says

An attorney for Maxell Holdings Ltd. said a $43.3 million trial victory against ZTE Corp. could encourage other companies it has sued to pay patent royalties and end litigation.

“We hope this verdict will lead to possible settlements,” Tatsuya Yamamoto, senior manager of intellectual property licensing and legal at Maxell, said in an interview. The goal, he said, is that “they’ll pay attention to this verdict and positive negotiations will be held in the future.”
