The scientific research center Well Living Lab Inc. lost its bid for trademark protection Nov. 19.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s refusal to register the mark “Well Living Lab,” on the grounds that it was merely descriptive.

Well Living is a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and real estate firm Delos Living LLC. It researches how indoor environments affect human health. For example, it recently announced it would study how office workers react to artificial lighting that mimics natural light.
