Volkswagen Gets Tribunal OK to Challenge Engine Patent

Volkswagen will get an opportunity before a government tribunal to invalidate an engine control patent the automaker is accused of infringing.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board said Tuesday it’ll allow Volkswagen Group of America Inc’s challenge of Michigan Motor Technologies LLC’s U.S. Patent No. 6,347,680 to proceed in an inter partes review. All of the patent’s 18 claims are being challenged.

Michigan Motor sued Volkswagen in 2019 for infringing its patent with its vehicles, including the Atlas, Passat, and Porsche Cayenne models. Michigan also sued the German company for infringing its other patents.
