Soccer Leagues Fight Over Name in Bid to Be Sport’s Second Tier

United Soccer Leagues LLC, which runs the second tier of American men’s professional soccer, says the United Premier Soccer League is infringing its trademark.

The UPSL is trying to “push its way into professional men’s soccer” and “capitalize on the goodwill, reputation and name recognition of USL,” the complaint filed May 15 says. It was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

The USL has “more than 100 soccer clubs in its three levels of professional and pre-professional men’s league soccer.” Its Championship League is “sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation as a Division ...
