Slack Sues to Head Off Custom Emoji Patent Infringement Claims

Slack Technologies Inc. sued the owner of a patent covering a system for creating custom emojis, seeking a declaration that it doesn’t infringe the patent.

Slack’s “emoji library” doesn’t work in the same way as the technology in U.S. Patent No. 9,565,149, it told a San Francisco federal court Friday.

Phoji Inc. told Slack its patent is directed to “creating emojis from real media and integrating images and text in messaging,” the complaint says. According to Phoji’s website, its app enables custom emojis that “deliver rich media such as audio, video, coupons and polls.” Slack’s custom emoji feature allegedly infringes...
