Samsung Loses Bid to Nix Nanoco ‘Quantum Dot’ TV Display Patents

Samsung Electronics Co. lost its bid to cancel parts of five Nanoco Technologies Ltd. television display patents, dealing a blow to the tech giant’s defense of a district court case in which Nanoco accused it of infringement.

The US Patent Trial and Appeal board ruled Monday that all challenged claims in U.S. Patent Nos. 9,680,068; 7,588,828; 7,803,423; 7,867,557; and 8,524,365 are valid and enforceable. The patents broadly cover “quantum dot” technology that’s aimed at improving LED TV screens. Samsung had argued that claims in the patents would’ve been obvious and anticipated by previous inventions.
