‘Pirates’ Copyright Case Means Discovery ‘Quagmire’, Disney Says

The Walt Disney Co. is asking the Ninth Circuit to reconsider a ruling that revived a copyright lawsuit alleging it ripped off an earlier screenplay for its first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.

A three-judge panel July 22 found a district court prematurely dismissed the case and said the screenplay shared sufficient similarities with “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” to survive a motion to dismiss.

Disney Wednesday asked either the three-judge panel or the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to reconsider the ruling.
