Patent Office Again Delays Digital File Requirement

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the second time pushed back the start of a new requirement to electronically file trademark applications and subsequent correspondence with examiners, this time to Jan. 15.

The delay is because stakeholders need more time to understand and prepare to comply with the new requirement, according to a draft to be published in the Dec. 18 Federal Register. The delay also lets the patent office ensure its systems are ready for the changes, the draft said.

The rule, first published in July, also requires designation of an email address for all patent office correspondence. ...
