Netflix Wipes Out Rival Data Compression Patent Claims

Netflix Inc. convinced a Patent and Trademark Office tribunal to invalidate part of Realtime Adaptive Streaming LLC’s data-compressing patent because it was obvious in light of prior inventions.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board on Wednesday found that prior Japanese and European patent applications and two U.S. patents rendered claims in U.S. Patent No. 9,769,477 obvious. The patent involves a process for compressing data.
